Winter is a season that offers new opportunities and challenges for woodland photographers. Despite the forest lacking the sheer vibrance of autumn foliage once the leaves have fallen, winter can nevertheless create incredibly beautiful and ethereal woodland scenes in certain conditions - whether it’s fresh and untouched snow, the deep orange hue of desiccated leaves clinging to tree branches, the crisp textures that a rare hoarfrost gives to frozen leaves, or the skeletal shapes of trees emerging through thick fog. Given the rarity of snow or hoarfrosts in the UK, I can’t wait to have more opportunities to capture these magical winter weather conditions, especially in my beloved local stomping ground, Savernake Forest.
